It was through the Moiano Gate that Clare passed from Assisi and its mercantile values to that other world outside the city gates. When one stands inside this gate today, it is not hard to imagine how radical was Clare’s passage through the dark night toward what she believed was the light she’d longed for all her life. The light that Francis preached, the light who was Christ, the light that was to be found among the poor and rejected.
