Writing via Max Pixel.jpgTo mark the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (aka All Souls' Day), we wish to remember the authors we've had the honor of publishing who passed away in 2017. Their memories live on in their books and in the lives they touched.

Michael Scanlan, T.O.R.

Truth About Trouble.jpgFr. Scanlan was an inspiring priest, educator, and writer. This dedicated brother in Christ helped revitalize the College of Steubenville into Franciscan University, where he worked as chancellor and shared the spirit of St. Francis with all he met. He passed away in January.

He wrote two books for Franciscan Media: The Truth About Trouble: How Hard Times Can Draw You Closer to God and Deliverance from Evil Spirits: A Weapon for Spiritual Warfare.

Sr. Sophia Michalenko, C.M.G.T.

Life of Faustina.jpegSr. Sophia lived the life of a consecrated religious for 70 years, working as a teacher, school administrator, typist, and of course author. She brought God's love and an infectious smile to all she did. She joined the faithful departed in March of this year.

Sr. Sophia was the author of The Life of Faustina Kowalska: The Authorized Biography.

Brian Doyle

Eight Whopping Lies.jpgBrian Doyle was a beloved novelist and essayist in both the religious and secular literary worlds. As the editor of the University of Portland literary journal, Portland Magazine, his work and words influenced thousands, showing them the ways of mercy and peace. He passed away in May.

Franciscan Media was honored to publish Doyle's final work: Eight Whopping Lies and Other Stories of Bruised Grace, a collection of essays written and curated by Doyle in the final years of his life. Read an excerpt here.

Michael Crosby, O.F.M. Cap.

Thank God Ahead of Time.jpgFr. Crosby was an author, speaker, and tireless crusader for reform in the Church and in many American industries. His many books advocating for church reform and exploring biblical discipleship made him a household name among many Catholics. Fr. Crosby was laid to rest in August.

Fr. Crosby was the author of the Franciscan Media book Thank God Ahead of Time: The Life and Spirituality of Solanus Casey.

The Catholic authors we celebrate were models of loving, faithful Gospel stewardship in the spirit of Saint Francis. They and all the faithful departed are remembered on All Souls' Day.
